Recorded at Tone Chaparral, Madison, Tennessee and The Powwow Fun Room, Mar Vista, California. ROCK 'N' ROLL CITY was nominated for the 2004 Grammy Award for Best Traditional Blues Album. Occasionally in the musical world, a younger act will bring in veteran musicians to lend an air of legitimacy to its sound, and a legend may bring in junior artists to update his or her sound. For his 2003 release, revered Chicago blues guitarist Eddy "The Chief" Clearwater tapped the eccentric surf-rock combo Los Straitjackets, and what ensues is fiery, rhythmic rock & roll that sounds (musically not production-wise) plucked off an archival recording from, say, 1956, when Clearwater was just starting out. While Clearwater is generally filed under "blues," he's always been known for his versatility and the amorphous nature of his music, which has regularly wandered into R&B and rock. It's no surprise then that he's routinely compared to Chuck Berry, and, on tracks like "Hillbilly Rock" and "Ding Dong Daddy," any difference is negligible.
