Following 2012's acoustic effort, "The Devil Ain't Got No Music," Lurrie Bell has returned to his bread and butter, which is cranking out electric Chicago blues along with a full backing band. Producer Dick Shurman wisely pushes Bell's crisp, snapping lead guitar to the front of the mix on a set featuring well-chosen covers ("She's a Good 'Un," "Going Away Baby," "My Little Machine") and a handful of new originals.
While it may not be quite a head-turning curveball like "The Devil Ain't Got No Music," "Blues in My Soul" offers the pleasurable experience of listening to a master do what he does best. This is right up there with the best material Lurrie Bell has ever recorded for the Delmark label. Fans of straight-up electric Chicago blues will want to snag this one for sure.
