Candi Staton returns to her secular southern roots with this release. Her recordings for the FAME label in the 60's are hidden gems of southern soul & this release, (her first secular release since 1982) looks back to those early recordings. Staton has been around the block in real life and her voice conveys the world weariness and insight that only comes from experience. If you value deep southern soul, this release captures some of it's best qualities and shows the strength of Staton's gifts. Many of the songs deal with love or marriges gone bad, (ie her own marrige to Clarence Carter being grist for the mill) and the overall feeling of the set is of love & loss......
