SPOT BARNETT led one of the toughest R&B bands in San Antonio in the 50's & 60's. A major influence on DOUG SAHM, Spot worked at the legendary CLUB EBONY where many of the best musicicans from San Antonio congregated. This collection of 50's sides comes directly from SPOT who to this day can be heard playing with the WESTSIDE HORNS group in Texas. Taken from extremely rare original records, this collection is the first ever chronicle of this honkin, stompin blues blaster. PLEASE NOTE: THIS SET HAS SOME SURFACE NOISE FROM THE RECORDS, AND IS A "CD-R" WITH AN ANNOTATED BOOKLET WRITTEN BY SPOT BARNETT. Musicians include Spot Barnett, Doug Sahm, Big Bud Harper and guitarist "Jitterbug" Webb. San Antonio Express-News: (10/27/2005) "In case you're new to town, Barnett, a Texas R&B, blues, rock, etc. icon, held forth for years at legendary East Side nightspots such as the Ebony Lounge, the Eastwood Country Club and the Lejac. He worked with other East Side originals including "Bowleg" Sam Moore, Datty White, Big Bud Harper and Joel Simmons. As a band leader and mentor, Barnett in the '50s and '60s introduced another generation of San Antonio music makers, including Henry Warden, Ernie "Murphy" Durawa, Doug Sahm and Randy Garibay, to the wonders of blues, R&B and jazz. Barnett was on top of the S.A. music world in the '50s and '60s but, in the early to mid-'70s, spent a couple of marijuana-related stints in Huntsville. When he got out of prison, Barnett joined Bobby "Blue" Bland's band before settling in South Bend, Ind., to work construction and retire from the music business. Retirement didn't take. In the late '90s, he returned to Texas to attend his brother's funeral and wound up moving back to San Antonio. Since his re-emergence, Barnett has made music with Doug Sahm & the Last Real Texas Blues Band, the Texas Tornados, the West Side Horns, June Parker, the Willie Jaye Band and lots of others. Spot Barnett is the real thing" JIM BEAL (San Antonio Express-News) 1. 20th Century Pt. 1 2. Pony Race 3. I Got A Girl 4. Ebony Shuffle 5. Saffire (Doug Sahm vcl.) 6. Summertime 7.
